Calvert County recognizes that alternative energy sources are important to increase America's energy security and to provide reliable domestic energy supply. As home to Maryland's only nuclear power plant - the first nuclear power plant in the nation to achieve relicensing - and one of the nation's largest liquid natural gas import facilities, we know the importance of their presence from both a local and national perspective.
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and the Cove Point LNG terminal together employ over 1,000 people, contribute to a wide range of community charities and infuse millions of dollars in tax revenue annually that funds services such as education, school construction, road projects, law enforcement, and fire/rescue services. Given our history with these entities, we are comfortable with their presence in our community, appreciate the financial contribution to our economy and, most importantly, trust their commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.

The northeastern corner of the county, including the municipalities of North Beach and Chesapeake Beach, are served by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).
Located in Lusby, Maryland, Cove Point LNG is an LNG export facility in the continental United States, and is the first such facility on the East Coast. It is recognized as one of the most technically advanced and environmentally sensitive LNG facilities in the world. While working at the forefront of America’s energy independence, LNG from the facility is also used to supplant coal-burning power plants and otherwise support energy needs in 28 different countries, playing a role in reducing global emissions.
The Cove Point LNG Terminal has a storage capacity of 14.6 billion cubic feet (BCF) and a daily send-out capacity of 1.8 BCF. The terminal connects, via its own pipeline, to the major Mid-Atlantic gas transmission systems of Transcontinental Gas Pipeline, Columbia Gas Transmission and Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage.
The Cove Point facility is unique among U.S. LNG terminals for its operational flexibility and demonstrated ability to perform all the functions of an LNG facility, including import, export, vaporization and send out, and liquefaction.
SMECO is a customer-owned electric cooperative that provides electricity to all but the northeastern portion of Calvert County, which is served by BGE. View the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) Website for more information.
Natural gas service is available in the central and southern portions of the county. Expansion plans are underway to extend gas to other sections of the county as demand increases.
Water and sewer is provided in the major town centers of Prince Frederick, Solomons, Lusby, Chesapeake Beach and North Beach and in Calvert County Industrial Park and the Patuxent Business Park (PBP).
